Knowing the difference between “to listen” and “to hear”:

To listen: to try to actively hear something. This is an intentional and focused activity.

I am listening to music.

She listens to the news on the radio.

To hear: when sound comes into your ear with no effort. This is accidental, involuntary, and effortless.

He heard a strange noise in the forest.

Speak louder, I can’t hear you.
