Cultural note:
Compared to other countries, Americans will often discuss race. We have many important race-related issues in our country such as police brutality, education, and gentrification. When we discuss race, we use the words “black” and “white” as adjectives. For example: “He is black” or “He is white”; “She is a white woman” or “She is a black woman”. If you want to use plural nouns, depending on the context you can say “African Americans” or “black people”. Conversely, you would say “white people”. You’ll also sometimes hear the terms “BIPOC” of “POC”. This stands for Black Indigenous People of Color, or People of Color. It’s used primarily in the United States to describe any person who is not considered white. For more information, read this article.
