Understanding the Present Perfect Continuous Tense “Has/Have” + “been”

The present perfect continuous tense is used when talking about experiences from the past that still have effects on the present situation.

You will hear native speakers use this tense very often.

Subject Have/has Past Participle Participle
I have been eating apples.
You have been exercising.
He/She/It has been watching TV.
They have been working hard.
We have been doing well.
There has been a storm.
There have been storms.
The girl has been good.
The protests have been chaotic.

Sometimes you’ll see the present perfect continuous used with nouns.

Has been (singular):

There has been a rise in dog thefts recently.

There has been a lot of rain.

Have been (plural):

There have been many dog robberies recently.

There have been many storms this winter.
